    Wow
I just learned that the creator of a homeschool curriculum we used some years ago has posted an appeal for help. It seems that he ran for office in 2010, and now three of his grown children have been targeted by members of the opposing party for political, educational, and occupational persecution. Incredible.

    Read more at this link.

If you want specifics you can go to the link. It's sheer thuggery, no matter what party affiliation is involved. (I'm not associated with either of the parties mentioned, just in case you were wondering. I have no dog in the fight except for a belief that this kind of behavior seriously threatens our freedom of choice.)

    Whatever happened to academic freedom?

It's not unusual for political candidates to attack each other in personal terms, rather than just on the issues. But I thought families were off limits, more or less?

The Giant Schnoz does *not* have cancer!!! She had a massive infection that looked like cancer, but the biopsy came back negative.

This is an answer to prayer. Thanks for your good thoughts and prayers.

    Birthday mathom, part 1
Thank you for the birthday greetings! I'm touched... and glad I was able to steal a few moments to duck back into LJ to say hello.

Here is part one of a short story (not many chapters in this one, and not many expected though it's not quite finished yet in draft form), as my present to you.

You Can Lead a Took to Water )
A friend of old Bilbo's. Well, well. 'And what does a friend of Uncle Bilbo want, in our stream?'

Pippin shrugged. 'I don't know,' he admitted, hugging himself to rub at his arms with his hands. 'Perhaps he wanted to catch a fish. We do have some fair sized fish in our stream.'

Eglantine surprised everyone, herself included, by laughing. 'I'd say we do!' she said, when she could catch her breath. She raised her eyes then, to look through the trees to the field, and saw with relief her husband and half a dozen hired hobbits jogging across the furrows toward them.

'I'd say that we do,' she repeated, and then she hugged her shivering little fisher close and rubbed his back to warm him.

Snatching a stolen moment to post about Transparent Aluminum.

Anybody else remember that scene from Star Trek IV?

    Peek at the past
Don't have time for much of anything at present, but I was wishing for some Gimli-Legolas-hobbity interaction, and went and looked up an old story to find it. So here, from At the End of His Rope, is a snippet of fun. Hope you enjoy it, too.

    Update: Tenth Walker
Two new chapters added to Bill's story this week, after a long absence.

Thanks to all who sent up prayers and good thoughts. The bronchitis is in abeyance. At present I cannot bear wood smoke (makes camping problematical) or perfumes, but most of the time I can breathe, which is a great improvement.

But back to Bill's story; in the two latest chapters, we reach the Ford of the Bruinen. (bookverse)

    Prayer request
Please pray for the Giant Schnoz. She's not well at all. Going to the vet in the morning.

    Hoping...

    ...it's fixable

    ...it's not horribly expensive

Have just finished [info]dreamflower02's birthday present, more than two years in the works, and posted the final chapter and story notes.

You can find the story here: O The Fox Went Out

Summary: Merry and Ferdi tell a story of an adventure they had before Pippin was born.

Happy (very belated!) Birthday, Dreamflower! And many happy returns!

[info]gamgeefest posted a birthday drabble for me! It's a lovely little (of course) snippet of Sam's marriage proposal to Rosie. *happy sigh*

    Update
Have at last added a new chapter to Thain.

Whew. No wonder I put it off for so long. Still, it is good to get the story moving again. Here's to finishing it before the year is out.

    What fun!
Obeliamedusa posted about wikipedia's "fictional plants" article. Wouldn't you know it, I only have a few minutes online at the moment (got to get the wee hobbits off to their pillows), but I visited that page and clicked on a link and found:

    List of Middle-earth plants

Plants, together with descriptions of how often they appeared and who was associated with them. Nice reference, if I don't lose it in the meantime. I'm working on a couple of chapters (in different stories) with athelas in them, so I appreciated reading this just now.

    40 Tips for a better 2009
First of all, let me say thanks to Febobe, Obelia Medusa, Anso, and CPSings4Him for your cards. You all are so very thoughtful! I think I've posted comments to your LJs to this effect, but I'm so often interrupted that I might have missed doing so.

If you sent a card and I didn't acknowledge it here, please know that the wee hobbits have become enamored of holiday cards with their bright pictures and it seems not all cards received have reached my inbox. We are dealing with the Shire post problems even now. Where *is* the Mayor when one wants him?

A big thank you to the knitted hobbits for the wonderful holiday card. I didn't know it had come--one of the wee hobbits absconded with it, apparently, as soon as it hit the mail slot (who knows when) and I only just happened upon it in the kitchen of all places! (Hmmm.)

Understandable, as the wee hobbits were absolutely charmed by KP and KM when they lunched together a while back.

Next, wanted to share this that came in my email today. I don't like to forward-forward-forward emails to people, though for some reason I often enjoy reading them. Now that most of my friends go to snopes.com to validate a rumour before sending on, most of the forward-forward-forwards I get are clever or heart-tugging.

Therefore, here you have it in an LJ post, to read if you wish, and it's not cluttering up your email box. I particularly liked the advice which included "Buy a lock if you have to." Hobbits don't have locks on doors, as a rule, but I've been sorely tempted to try one of these Bucklandish innovations...

    MEFA Congrats
Congratulations to those who organized the MEFAs this year, an amazing effort. Perhaps the best thing was the reading list provided--all these great stories just a click away. I know where to go when we have our Christmas break and I have some extra time to devote to reading.

    Belated birthday post
Dana, I'm sorry to be so belated in my birthday offerings. I was disabled by a killer of a headache and didn't finish your birthday fic or even make it to the post office, though I managed to pull myself together enough to sing a birthday duet with youngest...

So know that you have a present coming (picked out by hand by the wee hobbits, and as youngest so wisely said, "She wouldn't want us to pick it out by nose!"), just so soon as I can get to the P.O., and here I will post at least the first bit of the second bit of what I've been working on. And if you made sense of that, you've a better head than mine. (*h7gs*)

As it's been a little more than a year, you might want to refresh your memory with Part 1 before you start to read. Just a suggestion. Part 2 makes much more sense, taken in the context of Part 1's ending. Pardon me for sounding muddled. But then, I am.

Bound for Gondor, Part 2 )
    ***
There was only supposed to be a Part 1 and maybe Part 2, but it's very slow going lately, and i wanted you to have something before you reach retirement age, at least. So expect a conclusion to this sometime between now and your next birthday. At least that's the plan.
